Central Virginia and the Appalachian Trail (June 13-20, 2009)

Proposed Itinerary:

June 13  Depart Minneapolis St Paul, Arrive, Dulles Airport. Drive to Woodstock, VA, located on Shenandoah River. Camp here for two nights. 

June 14 Visit Luray Caverns, a National Natural Landmark. Afternoon tubing on the Shenandoah River. 

June 15 Depart Woodstock, Tour the New Market Civil War Battlefield. Arrive Big Meadow Campground, Shenandoah National Park. Take a short circuit hike on the Appalachian Trail in afternoon. Camp here for three nights.

June 16 Climb Old Rag Mountain, the most scenic mountain in the Shenandoah chain.  6 hour hike through forest and rocky terrain. Great views of the mountains!

June 17 Hike Whiteoak Canyon circuit trail, a 6 to 7 hour hike through old growth forest and along a stream with waterfalls.

June 18 Take a short hike on the Appalachian Trail in the morning. Travel to Stanardsville, VA. Stay at South River Country Inn on a cattle farm outside Charlottesville, VA., for two nights. Swim in pool in afternoon. Showers!

June 19 After breakfast at the Inn, visit Monticello, President Thomas Jefferson’s Home in Charlottesville. Afternoon field games or swimming. 

June 20 After breakfast at the Inn, drive to Dulles Airport. If time permits, visit the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Annex at Dulles. Depart Washington, DC, arrive Minneapolis St Paul Airport.

Scouts must be 14 years or older to participate.  All events and times are subject to change.  The estimated cost is about $400 plus airfare.  Scouts should bring extra money for some lunches and incidentals. Minimum group size is 8, maximum 12, including adults.
