My First Six Months With Troop 370

E-mail Print

Basic Organizations
1.  The new scouts will be grouped into patrols of generally 5 to 8 scouts who are their own age.  The boys often become close friends through the years.
2.  A troop guide will be assigned to the patrol.  The troop guide is a senior scout who has volunteered to assist with a patrol of new scouts.  The troop guide will help out with things such as campout menu planning and how to set up a tent.

Activities
1.  The boys may now participate in troop activities including community service projects and monthly campouts.
2.  The boys are encouraged to attend the weekly troop meetings.  We meet year round but we understand some of the time you may not be able to make it.  We're okay with that.
3.  Your son has the opportunity to attend weekend campouts 11 months out of the year. (Every month except December)

Advancement
1.  One or two adults are leaders of our unique "Fast Track" program.  This program is specifically designed to get first year scouts through their initial rank advancement of scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class.
2.  Every week as part of the troop meeting the fast Track leaders will meet with the boys and work on rank advancement.

Summer Camp
1.  Summer Camp is a busy and fun time for the boys at Voyager Bay Camp located three hours north of the Twin Cities.  The boys are assigned a campsite that is near the adult site and the mess hall.  Since many activities occur at the mess hall or further down the road at the beach, there is an adult walking by the new boy's site frequently.  When walking by the site adults can see the new scout's campsite and informally check to make sure that things are on track.
2.  There are four class periods and an activity period in the summer camp day.  During the morning class periods the first year scouts will work on their Fast Track advancement.  In the afternoon they will work on Swimming merit badge and First Aid merit badge.  Swimming and First Aid merit badge are two life skills and are both Eagle required merit badges that will help the boys with their advancement in the future.
3.  The camp has volunteer cooks that do the group cooking at the summer camp.  This helps to keep our very busy schedule on track and the boys can focus on merit badge work.
4.  In addition to merit badge work, the boys enjoy participating in activities such as swimming, canoeing, rifle shooting, climbing, and archery.  We have found that if we keep them busy there is less opportunity for the boys to get home sick.

During this six month period, your son will advance much of the way to First Class and may have already earned two Eagle required merit badges.  More importantly, he has started the process of growing and maturing from a boy into a responsible young adult.
